February

Orchidelirium
Thursday, 18 February 2016

Two fortunate things about February. First, even this year with an extra day added in it is still the shortest month of the year. And by now, those of us in the Northeast are quite tired of winter and more than ready for Spring. And second, late February is when The New York Botanical Garden presents its annual orchid extravaganza. This year, I anticipate that all events will be exceptionally extraordinary. Why? Because 2016 is the 125th anniversary of the Garden's founding.

Orchidelirium, that's the name of upcoming show in the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory.

The goal: share with visitors the far-flung adventures of orchid hunters swept up in 19th-century orchidelirium, the consuming mad passion for orchids when explorers risked life and limb to secure these exotic and captivating flowers.

This concept rendering is just a soft focus intimation of how the gallery will be transformed

But, you'll have to wait. The show itself opens on February 27.

The reality will be multiple pots of lush orchids in endless display of colors and forms, regularly refreshed for exquisite display before the exhibition closes on April 17.

There is a sneak peek press preview on Thursday, 25 February so come back for an update. Meanwhile, if you want you can preorder tickets here .
